I Don't Want to Miss a Thing
Aerosmith, 1998
Aerosmith, the Boston rock band fronted by Steven Tyler, released I Don't Want to Miss a Thing in 1998 for the film Armageddon, in which Tyler's daughter Liv starred. It was the band's first single to reach number one in America, almost thirty years into their career. Couples choose it for the sweeping orchestral arrangement and a lyric about staying awake just to watch a partner sleep, which turns a big power ballad into something tender. It starts quietly and builds, so it suits a dance with a dramatic finish. Diane Warren wrote it alone, and she has said the idea came from a television interview in which James Brolin said he missed Barbra Streisand while they slept.
