Wonderful Tonight
Eric Clapton, 1977
Eric Clapton wrote Wonderful Tonight in 1976 and released it in 1977 on his album Slowhand. The subject was Pattie Boyd, who was then his partner and had earlier been married to George Harrison. He wrote it while waiting for her to get ready for Paul and Linda McCartney's annual Buddy Holly party, which is why the lyric opens with a woman deciding what to wear and later has her asking whether she looks all right. Couples choose it for that scene, which could be any wedding morning, and for the lazy guitar figure that invites a slow sway rather than a dance. The single followed in March 1978.
