Upside Down
Diana Ross, 1980
Diana Ross brought in Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards to write and produce her 1980 album Diana, and Upside Down was its first single, reaching number two in the UK and number one in America. Couples who want disco with a bit of glamour pick it because the lyric is about being turned inside out by someone and loving it, and the chorus hook is one of the easiest in the genre for guests to sing back. The bass line keeps it moving without rushing anyone. Ross was unhappy with the Chic mix and remixed the whole album at Motown with engineer Russ Terrana without the producers' knowledge, and Rodgers and Edwards objected publicly.
