Iris
Goo Goo Dolls, 1998
Goo Goo Dolls formed in Buffalo, New York, and had been releasing records for more than a decade before Iris arrived in 1998 on the City of Angels soundtrack, later appearing on their album Dizzy Up the Girl. John Rzeznik wrote it while thinking of the film's angel, who is willing to surrender immortality for love, and that sense of giving up everything for one person is what draws couples to it. The slow build from a quiet opening to a soaring chorus with strings suits a first dance that wants to grow. The guitar is in an unusual tuning, with the lowest string tuned to B and the other five all tuned to D.
