Holding On
Gregory Porter, 2016
Gregory Porter first released Holding On in 2015 as a dance track with Disclosure, then recorded it again as a slow ballad to open his 2016 album Take Me to the Alley. The album version is the one couples choose: a piano led jazz setting for that baritone, with a lyric about staying put when leaving would be easier. It suits a first dance because the tempo is a slow sway and the chorus repeats a short phrase that becomes a vow. Take Me to the Alley won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Porter's second, while the Disclosure version reached number forty six in the UK and topped the American dance club chart.
