From the Ground Up

Dan + Shay released From the Ground Up in 2016 as the lead single from their second album, Obsessed. Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney wrote it about their grandparents, whose marriages had each lasted more than sixty years, and the song follows a couple from the first promise through to old age. Couples choose it because it treats the wedding as the beginning of a long build rather than the finish line, and the measured tempo lets them take their time on the floor. The duo wrote it with Chris DeStefano in about ninety minutes, just after Smyers had returned from his grandfather's funeral in Ohio.
