Forever and Ever, Amen
Randy Travis, 1987
Randy Travis was the voice of the traditional country revival of the late 1980s, and Forever and Ever, Amen from his 1987 album Always and Forever spent three weeks at number one in America, won its writers Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz a Grammy and became his signature song. The lyric is a plain, slightly humorous vow that the singer will still be around when both of them are old and grey, which suits couples who want warmth rather than tears. The bright shuffle tempo is easy to move to. Travis lost most of his speech after a stroke in 2013, but in 2025 Carrie Underwood sang it at the Grand Ole Opry and handed him the closing amen.
