All I Want for Christmas Is You

Mariah Carey wrote this with Walter Afanasieff for her 1994 album Merry Christmas, and it has since become the biggest festive single of the modern era, reaching number one in the UK for the first time in 2020. Couples marrying in December pick it because the lyric says the only gift worth having is the person in front of you, and the bouncing Phil Spector style arrangement fills a dance floor without any effort. It suits a couple who want their first dance to turn straight into a party. Carey has said she began writing it on a small keyboard at her house in upstate New York, and that the layered backing vocals were what took the time.
